Influenza A(H1N1) reached Davao City

As of today, the total count of confirmed cases of influenza A(H1N1) infections have reached a swelling 392 since its spread a month ago. The first recorded and confirmed case in Davao City, Mindanao is a four-year old boy from one of the towns in Agusan in the Caraga Region who is now being properly treated in isolation at Davao Medical Center. A nine-year old girl was also admitted in the same hospital who shows symptoms of possible influenza A(H1N1) infection. The result on the examination on the girl’s swab samples is yet to be revealed. Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said that of the 392 cases, 275 have fully recovered and have been discharged from hospitals. He also said that 45 of the 48 new cases are Filipinos while the rest are foreigners. These 48 new cases are said to be mild in nature.

As the Tokyo official visit of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo ended, the Philippines has secured $5 billion in investment commitments and offers of official development assistance which is focused primarily on agriculture credit programs, infrastructure, and disaster mitigation projects.

Pres. Arroyo met with Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko and held talks with Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso. Both countries vowed to “foster a strategic partnership for the future”.

The two leaders likewise announced the start of talks for a mutual legal assistance treaty and a social security agreement between the Philippines and Japan.

Loan agreements were entered into by the two countries yesterday amounting to $467 million to finance an agriculture credit facility and fund flood mitigation and other infrastructure projects in the country through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Land Bank of the Philippines and the Development Bank of the Philippines.

Industry Secretary Peter Favila also disclosed that a Japanese publicly-listed firm has presented plans to Pres. Arroyo to undertake a resort complex development project in the country which could reach the amount of $6 billion.
